Angelina Jolie is easily one of the most recognizable actresses all around the globe. But even she had to start somewhere, and Californication's David Duchovny joked that he played a role in her becoming a huge star.
Angelina Jolie might be one of Hollywood's nepo babies, given that her father is Academy Award-winning actor Jon Voight, but the actress has proven her talent time and time again. Whether it's as an actress, director, or producer, Angelina Jolie has done it all and well. However, during an appearance on Sirius XM's Radio Andy on Thursday, David Duchovny explained why he feels like he had a hand in "discovering" Angelina Jolie.
During a segment where he said a word to describe several celebrities he co-starred with, when he got to Angelina Jolie, Duchovny said that, "I feel like I discovered Angelina Jolie." The actor co-starred with Jolie in 1997's Playing God, which was one of Jolie's earliest roles. The actress made her screen debut with her famous dad in 1982's Lookin' to Get Out, but she began her career a decade later. She received numerous nominations early in her career and took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1999's Girl, Interrupted.
"I feel like I discovered Angelina Jolie ."
"Yeah, cause I was casting, I was part of the casting," Duchovny explained about the movie they starred in together after host Andy Cohen asked him to explain. "I didn't discover her, but… she came in, and I just knew she was a movie star, and I told everybody [that] we've gotta cast her."
Playing God was written by Mark Haskell Smith and the casting directors were Elaine J. Huzzar and Johanna Ray. The film also starred Timothy Hutton, Michael Massee, Peter Stormare, Andrew Tiernan, Gary Dourda, John Hawkes, and many more. Playing God wasn't Jolie's first film, but her role as Claire was just at the beginning of her career.
Angelina Jolie Has Many Roles Coming
Angelina Jolie has starred in many genres and got critical acclaim for her skills. She appeared in dramas, actions, video game adaptations, superhero films, and even Disney adaptations. Aside from the accolades she received for her acting and directing, Jolie has recently become a Tony Award winner, too. The actress serves as a producer for the Broadway musical The Outsiders. She also received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2013.
Although Jolie has focused on other projects recently, she has some exciting roles coming up. The actress will reprise her role as Maleficent in the third installment of the successful Disney film following the famous villain. One of her upcoming projects is the adaptation of Alessandro Baricco's novel Without Blood, which she wrote, directed, and produced. She is also set to star in Pablo Larraín's biographical film Maria about opera singer Maria Callas in the titular role, and also in The Kept, an adaptation of James Scott's novel, and Every Note Played, based on Lisa Genova's same-titled book, the author behind 2014's Still Alice.
