‘Wonder Woman’ Director Reveals If She Would Return to the DC Universe

By Mike Smith 11/07/2025

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins reveals if she would have any interest in returning to direct another superhero title. Jenkins directed the first 2017 film and its sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, which released in 2020. She was developing a third Wonder Woman at DC before the project was canceled following the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the heads of DC Studios, who sought to take the franchise in a different direction.

Speaking with Marvel Cinematic Universe News (via Comic Book), Jenkins was asked if she had any interest in returning to the superhero genre. The outlet specifically cited the DCU Wonder Woman reboot and the Amazon-focused prequel series, Paradise Lost. "You never say never because I love Wonder Woman,” Jenkins said, before adding, “But at the moment, I’m so excited with what I’m doing, and it’s always good to do something new. I loved making superhero movies … you never know, but I’m having a good time."

It seems unlikely that Patty Jenkins will return to helm a Wonder Woman reboot, or possibly any film in the new DCU, following James Gunn and Peter Safran throwing out her planned trilogy conclusion. Jenkins clearly has a passion for superhero projects, as before she directed Wonder Woman, she was originally hired to helm Thor: The Dark World but dropped out due to creative differences. With how much she and Marvel Studios have changed, she could possibly step back into the MCU or develop another superhero project from companies like Image and Dark Horse.

Outside the superhero genre, Jenkins is developing another major project. She is still attached to write and direct Lucasfilm's Star Wars film Rogue Squadron. Originally announced in December 2020, the film was delayed due to script concerns and Jenkins' commitments to Wonder Woman 3. In 2023, Jenkins revealed she had renewed her contract with Lucasfilm, though it is unclear when, or if, Rogue Squadron will hit theaters, as the next two releases are The Mandalorian & Grogu in 2026 and Starfighter in 2027.

As for the DCU version of Wonder Woman, Gunn is moving forward with a new reboot of the character. Supergirl screenwriter Ana Nugueira is penning the script, with rumors suggesting the movie is being fast-tracked for a potential 2027 or 2028 release. Wonder Woman's mythology is already part of the DCU, as the villain Circe was featured in Creature Commandos. Meanwhile, actors like Adria Arjona (Andor) and Alexandra Daddario (The White Lotus) have commented about how fans want them to be the new Wonder Woman.
