Will there be a Woman Woman 3?

It's all change in James Gunn’s newly revamped DC movie-verse with new stories planned for both Superman and Batman — but what about Wonder Woman 3?

Back in 2022, The Suicide Squad director first unveiled his plans for an all-new interconnected DC movie world titled the DC Extended Universe or DCEU for short.

Launching with a Henry Cavill-less take on the Man of Steel in Superman, Gunn’s plans promised a variety of new projects spanning both big and small screens and featuring a mix of well and lesser-known heroes and villains.

However, at its core, the Guardians of the Galaxy helmer promised to take the studio’s “diamond characters — which is Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman — and… use them to prop up other characters that people don’t know.”

So far, we know that former Batman Ben Affleck won’t be returning to the Cowl for Gunn, and newcomer David Corenswet is inheriting Kal-El’s super-suit — but what about Queen of the Amazons? Here’s everything we know so far about what's happening with Wonder Woman 3…

The short answer? Not anytime soon, according to director Patty Jenkins, who helmed Wonder Woman and its sequel Wonder Woman 1984.

She told Variety in May 2024 that the third movie in her trilogy is “over for the time being, easily forever” as DC focuses on Gunn and Safran’s new movie-verse.

Jenkins was on board to direct a third entry in the series before conversations with Warner Bros. fell apart shortly before the Gunn reshuffle. Despite this, Jenkins assured fans that she “never walked away” from the threequel, insisting that she “was open to considering anything asked of me.”

She added: “It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time. DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.”

The news came as a shock to fans but also cast members, including star Chris Pine — AKA Wonder Woman’s on-screen love interest Steve Trevor.

“I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere,” Pine told Business Insider. “I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character; Patty is such a thoughtful director.”

Pine added that, even if Wonder Woman 3 was to materialise, he doubted that he would be part of it. “It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back,” he said.

Will Gal Gadot return as Wonder Woman?

As it stands, though, even if Wonder Woman does return, it doesn't look like she’ll be played by Gal Gadot. Having made the role of this iconic superhero her own in Jenkins’ original Wonder Woman movie in 2017, Gadot returned for its 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, which was also directed by Jenkins.

In between Wonder Woman’s primary movies, the character made guest spots in various other interlinked DC movies, including 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2017’s Justice League two-parter and the 2023 sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, with her most recently appearing alongside Affleck’s Batman and Ezra Miller speedster in 2023’s The Flash.

Filmed before the Gunn shake-up, it was anyone’s guess as to what the future of Gadot’s Wonder Woman looked like — until the actor shed some new light on the situation in August 2023.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Gadot assured fans that “I love portraying Wonder Woman. It’s so close and dear to my heart,” before revealing that “from what I heard from James and from Peter is that we’re gonna develop a Wonder Woman 3 together.”

This news was doubled down upon in an interview with Flaunt magazine in which Gadot said “I was invited to a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran… and what they told me, and I’m quoting: ‘You’re in the best hands. We’re going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman— you’ve got nothing to worry about.’ So time will tell.”

However, just as soon as this news dropped we got word that Gadot’s third Wonder Woman movie perhaps wasn’t as much a part of Gunn’s new DCEU as she first thought. According to sources close to the situation who spoke to Variety, a third Wonder Woman movie is not in active development at DC Studios and both Gunn and Safran currently have no plans to add one in.

As it stands, the only Wonder Woman-related project that remains on the cards is Paradise Lost, a prequel series set years before the studio’s modern-day Wonder Woman movies.

In addition, Variety also confirmed that it’s no guarantee that Gadot’s take on the character will continue amid their newly revised cinematic universe, which opens up the possibility of audiences meeting an all-new Diana Prince in the future.

At the time of writing, no plot details for Wonder Woman 3 have been revealed or even rumoured just yet.

With Gunn hoping to differentiate his cinematic universe from what has come before, we don’t know how much of Wonder Woman’s previous storyline will successfully make the transition to his DCEU.

Check back soon though because as soon as we know more, you’ll find it here.

Is there a trailer for Wonder Woman 3?

No such luck. Gunn’s DCEU is still in the very early stages of its gestation so we likely have a long time to wait before we get to see any clips or trailers from a third Wonder Woman movie.
