From snail slime serums to vampire facials, the skincare industry has invented some wild treatments. Most of these trends come from South Korea – the hub of skincare products and therapies. Now, we are calling the next big thing in K-Beauty which is all set to become a mainstream trend in the west: Salmon Sperm Facials or Rejuran Skin Booster.

The trend went viral after Jennifer Aniston, in a conversation with The Wall Street Journal, mentioned that she always keeps on experimenting when it comes to beauty. The actress recalled her experience with the beauty treatment. She noted that when it comes to looking young, she’s open to trying just about anything at least once in her life. From there, she revealed that when an aesthetician recommended the salmon sperm facial to her, she was ready to give it a go even though she was not entirely sure what it was.

While she did not continue to use this treatment, it did gain popularity in the US. But what is the hype all about? Let's find out.

What is salmon sperm facial?

While the first glance of the trend might sound off-putting, the actual ingredient is not as bizarre as it sounds. This popular K-beauty trend utilized polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN). It is a purified molecule found in the DNA of salmon fish. PDRN is said to offer significant anti-ageing benefits.

Basically, its not the sperm itself but the DNA extracted from the sperm cells of salmon trout or chum salmon. This is either applied topically or injected to improve the complexion and repair damaged cells. It is also known to boost hyaluronic acid levels.

More about the procedure and the science behind it

PDRN is an active mixture of polynucleotides with molecular weights ranging from 50 to 1500 kilodalton. It is known for its ability to stimulate cell growth and repair, making it an essential ingredient for anti-aging treatments.

How do you perform salmon sperm facial?

For the process, you need to cleanse and exfoliate your skin first. This is done to remove any impurities or dead skin cells. Once done, a special serum containing the salmon sperm DNA is applied to the face. It is then massaged into the skin for more than 10 to 20 minutes to ensure better absorption.

People can also get the DNA extracted from salmon sperm injected into their faces. However, it is important that you involve an expert in the process.
