After a two-year wait and much anticipation, The Summer I Turned Pretty will officially start releasing its third and final installment this week. The upcoming season is based on the final book in the Jenny Han trilogy, titled We’ll Always Have Summer, and it will continue to focus on the central love triangle between Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) and the Fisher brothers, Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).
The second season of the teen drama picks up one year after the events of Season 1, for what turns out to be a very different summer. Filling in the blanks with flashbacks, it is revealed that Susannah (Rachel Blanchard) has passed away in the meantime, and that Belly and Conrad have since dated and broken up. Although there are no plans for a summer in Cousins for that year, Belly, Conrad, Jeremiah, Steven (Sean Kaufman), and Taylor (Rain Spencer) end up spending some time at the beach to try to save the house from being sold. It may be shorter than their other summers at Cousins Beach, but it turns out to be just as transformative.
In 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' Season 2, the Conklins and Fishers Fought To Save the Cousins Beach House
The events of The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 really kick off after Conrad suddenly goes missing during his final exams. This gets Jeremiah and Belly in touch again, as they go to look for him, and wind up back at the Cousins House. It is there that Belly and Jeremiah learn why Conrad left in the middle of finals: the Cousins Beach house now solely belongs to Susannah's half-sister, Julia (Kyra Sedgwick), who is selling it. The season sees the teens caught between saying their goodbyes to the house and trying to find a way to somehow stop the sale. In the process, the Fishers reunite with Julia's child and their cousin, Skye (Elsie Fisher). Despite the initial conflict, the cousins are able to find common ground, and Skye decides to talk to their mother on the Fishers' behalf.
Ultimately, Laurel (Jackie Chung) is the one who is finally able to get through to Julia. Julia stops the sale, and Adam (Tom Everett Scott) agrees to sell the Fishers' Boston house, so that he can buy the Cousins Beach House for his sons instead. As of the end of the season, the Fishers and Conklins still share the beach house in Cousins. The biggest change is that Julia and Skye have become a part of the Fishers' lives again, and they will likely return for at least part of the summers to come, particularly after Laurel and Julia's heart-to-heart about Susannah.
In 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' Season 2, Romantic Feelings Resurface at Cousins Beach
In the quest to save the Cousins Beach house, Belly, Conrad, Jeremiah, Steven, and Taylor all spend quite a bit of time together. It is the longest time that Belly has spent with Conrad since their breakup, and she finds all of her old feelings returning. Jeremiah competes for her attention as well, and Belly begins to consider him as a romantic possibility, more seriously than she did back in Season 1. Belly once again finds herself torn between Conrad and Jeremiah throughout their time at Cousins. After initially making amends with both brothers, she has romantic moments with both throughout the season that make her consider the possibility of being with each of them again.
Taylor starts the season dating a DJ named Milo (Will Spencer). She has long moved past her feelings for Steven after the events of the previous summer, and she seems happy enough in her new relationship. Taylor and Steven end up spending a lot of time together through their mutual concern for Belly, and their dynamic is much more natural now. They give each other grief, but they also open up to one another. Steven realizes his feelings for Taylor while she's still with Milo, and he later plays a role in their breakup. Steven and Taylor then share their first kiss towards the end of the season, and they officially become a couple in the Season 2 finale.
At the End of Season 2, Belly Chose to Be with Jeremiah
After the Cousins Beach House is saved, Belly, Jeremiah, and Conrad set about making sure Conrad passes his exams. He does, and he ultimately transfers to Stanford as a Pre-Med student at the end of the season. The main focus of the final episodes, though, is the love triangle between Belly and the Fisher brothers. While Conrad is taking his last exam at Brown, Jeremiah takes Belly for a tour of the nearby Finch College, where he will be starting in the fall. During this tour, the two get even closer, and they ultimately share a kiss. Conrad walks in on them, leading the tension between the three to finally boil over. While Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah have been walking on eggshells around each other throughout the season, Belly is now forced to choose between the two of them.
Conrad initially pushes Belly away after her kiss with Jeremiah. That night, while waiting out a storm in a motel room, though, Conrad admits that he still wants to be with Belly. Still, Belly chooses to be with Jeremiah the next morning, and the two kiss again. Afterward, Conrad takes back what he said, and then the new couple leaves without him. As of the end of the season, Belly and Jeremiah are already in a serious relationship, although their romance is intentionally put in contrast with Steven and Taylor's in a way that doesn't bode well for the former. Meanwhile, a heartbroken Conrad is getting ready to start at Stanford in the fall after watching Belly move on with Jeremiah. Season 3 is set to closely follow the events of We'll Always Have Summer, although the time jump at the start of the season is now set to be four years instead of two. Either way, it is clear from the season's trailer that the additional amount of time isn't enough to shut down Belly's feelings for Conrad.
The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 will release its episodes weekly on Prime Video starting July 16.
