For Jennifer Lawrence, 2012 was a great year. That year, she appeared as Katniss Everdeen in the first installment of The Hunger Games film franchise and starred as Tiffany Maxwell in Silver Linings Playbook, a role that won her an Academy Award. Starting on Jan. 1, Silver Linings Playbook will drop on Max.
The logline for Silver Linings Playbook reads: “A man with bipolar disorder who was recently released from a mental institution befriends a mysterious woman and learns to let go of some dreams in order to rebuild his life.”
The Movie Was Nominated for Eight Oscars
Although Lawrence was the only person to take home an Oscar statue for her work on the film, Silver Linings Playbook was nominated for a total of eight Academy Awards. Lawrence’s co-lead, Bradley Cooper (Guardians of the Galaxy), was nominated for best leading actor, Robert De Niro was nominated for best supporting actor, and Jacki Weaver for best supporting actress. Additionally, the film’s writer and director, David O. Russell, was nominated in both categories and the film itself was up for Best Picture. Jay Cassidy and Crispin Struthers were also nominated for best film editing.
Silver Linings Playbook is “Certified Fresh”
Commercially and critically, the movie, billed as a romantic comedy, was a success and still boasts a “Certified Fresh” 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. It earned $236.4 million during its theatrical run, according to Box Office Mojo, against a reported budget of $21 million. The film is based on the 2008 novel Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick.
Lawrence’s Next Project
After her Oscar win in 2012, Lawrence has gone on to receive Oscar nods for 2015’s Joy and 2013’s American Hustle. She was also nominated for her performance in 2010’s Winter’s Bone. This summer, it was announced that Lawrence’s latest project will be A24’s Why Don’t You Love Me? The film is based on Paul B. Rainey’s 2023 graphic novel of the same name. Per Deadline, Lawrence will star in the film and also serve as a producer on the project through her Excellent Cadaver imprint, with A24 and Square Peg. Rainey is set to executive produce the film.
Cooper’s Maestro Earned Seven Oscar Nods
Cooper has been nominated for a total of 12 Oscars, with the latest three coming in 2024 for his work on 2023’s Maestro, which chronicled the lifelong relationship between Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein. The Netflix film was written and directed by Cooper, who played the titular Maestro Leonard Bernstein. Carey Mulligan, who played Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein, was also nominated for an Academy Award for her performance. The film received seven total Oscar nominations.
CBR named Maestro as one of the 10 Best Netflix Original Movies Since 2020. The film also starred Matt Bomer (Doom Patrol), Michael Urie (Shrinking), and Sarah Silverman. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.
Silver Linings Playbook lands on Max on Jan. 1.
