Selena Gomez moved to tears by sweet encounter with Salma Hayek on Golden Globes red carpet

Before she spoke a word on tonight’s Golden Globes red carpet broadcast, Selena Gomez was already wiping away happy tears.

The waterworks started flowing as Gomez, 32, approached the podium where actress Salma Hayek, 58, was about to be interviewed by red carpet co-host Marc Malkin.

Instead of launching into her live spot, Hayek hopped down, hugged Gomez, and insisted the 32-year-old grab the mic and take her spot alongside Malkin, Variety’s senior culture and events editor.

The act of kindness moved Gomez to tears.

“It’s actually the sweetest thing ever,” she told Malkin. “I love her. I looked up to her. My dad’s crush was her. Everything.”

“Wait ‘til your dad hears this,” Malkin joked.

Gomez, dressed in a Prada gown she described as “Cinderella-like,” is a double nominee tonight, securing nods for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Emilia Pérez and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Only Murders in the Building.

The singer-actress’ solo time on the podium was cut short when she was joined by her Murders costars Martin Short and Steve Martin, and the trio immediately fell into the on-screen chemistry they showcase in their Hulu hit.

Short, 78, reached the podium first and surprised Gomez, serenading her until Martin, 79, quite literally bounced between the two of them.

“Oh, someone needs attention,” Gomez joked as Martin started fussing with his hair, asking, “How much netting can you see?”

Despite the playful teasing, Gomez credited the men for her presence at the evening’s awards ceremony.

“This is the reason I ever was at the Golden Globes is these two guys,” she said.

Martin, meanwhile, turned the compliment back around, praising Gomez’s dual acting nods. “How ‘bout this gal?” he asked. “It’s just amazing.”

Gomez’s turn as Jessi Del Monte in Emilia Pérez marks the actress’ first Spanish-speaking role. Netflix’s musical drama is nominated for 10 awards, including Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, Best Director, Best Original Score, and two Best Original Song nominations.
