Ryan Guzman Borrowed a Line From His ‘9-1-1’ Character to Avoid a Date After His Divorce

Ryan Guzman channeled his 9-1-1 character Eddie Diaz in the immediate aftermath of his real-life divorce in order to rebuff a woman’s advances.

“One thing that happened that was almost verbatim from one of the episodes,” he explained in the Monday, March 3 episode of the Zach Sang Show. “Girls come up to Eddie and start trying to ask him… they’re showing their interest pretty much. And he’s like, ‘Nah, I’m not your type right now.’ And he kind of just moves forward. That happened in my real life.”

The incident occurred after Guzman, 37, split from Brazilian actress Chrysti Ane in 2023. The pair married in 2015 and share two kids, Mateo, 6, and Genevieve, 4.

“I had just split up with my ex. We had just gotten a divorce,” he continued. “I’m trying to heal all my trauma and trying to do what I can for my kids. And then a beautiful lady comes up to me and runs up and asks me for my number and was like ‘No, you’ve got to please give me your number.’”

That’s when Guzman channeled his inner Eddie from Ryan Murphy’s hit procedural.

“I don’t know how, it just came out of my mouth. And I was like, ‘Oh, I’m not your type.’ And I’m like, ‘No way,’” he said. “‘I just said what Eddie just said, the heck, what am I saying right now?’ An out of body experience. But I pulled from my character, which is crazy.”

Guzman said the woman in question was understanding about him not wanting to date so soon after his divorce.

His story comes the week of 9-1-1’s midseason return. The first half of season 8, which aired in late 2024, ended with Eddie contemplating a move to El Paso, where his son, Christopher, is living with his grandparents.

Before the season premiere in September, Guzman reflected on his gratitude for the show’s longevity.

“I think everybody has a sense of gratitude for where we are. I mean, we are a procedural that’s lasted eight seasons now. It’s exceptional, to [say] the least,” Guzman exclusively shared to Us Weekly in a September issue. “So, it’s just that kind of thing that we were excited to get back to our work family and get back into this season 8. It’s just [like], ‘All right, how can we make this just as good as last year?’”

9-1-1 airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. on ABC.
