Nicole Kidman and Salma Hayek went viral this week for what appeared to be tension captured on video, but a source tells PEOPLE exclusively that the incident has been misconstrued.
After a resurfaced video of the pair at the Balenciaga show on Sept. 30 sparked debate online, a source who was there tells PEOPLE "nothing happened."
"They were being bombarded by cameras at the end of the show while in the middle of a conversation," the insider adds. "People are looking at clips and making a story out of nothing."
In the video, the actresses and Katy Perry, can be seen posing for photos. Hayek, 58, puts an arm across Kidman’s body to seemingly position her so she’s facing the photographers. That’s when Kidman, 57, removes Hayek’s hand from her arm, turns away from her to hug Perry and then exchanges a few words with Hayek.
Eventually, Kidman walks out of the frame as Hayek and Perry continue to take photos.
Another clip shows the two stars smiling together and Kidman rubbing Hayek’s shoulder.
A source close to the women tells PEOPLE, "This whole situation is silly. Salma and Nicole love and respect each other."
Nicole Kidman Blows Kisses to Fans at Balenciaga's Paris Show, Her First Appearance Since Mother's Death
Hayek posted her own carousel from the event on Instagram, including a photo alongside Kidman.
The Balenciaga show marked Kidman’s first public since the death of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, in September. The Perfect Couple star also made an appearance at a Miu Miu dinner party alongside her daughter, Sunday Rose, 16, who made her runway debut during the Miu Miu fashion show on Oct. 1.

Kidman was announced as the ambassador of Balenciaga last December. The brand's parent company is Kering, which is run by Hayek’s husband, CEO François-Henri Pinault, who was seated next to his wife and Kidman at the show last month.
But that’s not the only connection between the two movie stars.
Hayek has also maintained a friendship with Kidman’s ex-husband Tom Cruise.
Hayek and Cruise have known each other for years, first working together on the 2006 film Ask the Dust.
After their collaboration, Cruise and Hayek became semi-regular dinner partners over the next two decades, and to celebrate the Top Gun star’s 62nd birthday this summer, Hayek posted a sweet shot of the two of them dressed up at Victoria Beckham’s birthday party earlier this year.
