If you're missing The Wheel of Time, there's only one great option on TV to fill the hole. After three consistently improving seasons, The Wheel of Time was canceled by Amazon Prime Video in a surprise decision, following the streaming service's intentions to expand the saga into a fantasy franchise.
There are several other fantasy shows out there, but none of them capture the epic, awe-inspiring feeling of The Wheel of Time. Robert Jordan's books are special, and the show meant a lot to a larger audience pool, so I wouldn't recommend something as a replacement without consideration.
Apple TV+'s Foundation Is The Best Wheel Of Time Replacement
Why Foundation Season 3’s Cleon Arc Demands An “Unrecognizable” Lee Pace Explained By Stars
I know, Foundation is a science fiction series, but hear me out. The series is adapted from Isaac Asimov's prolific novels of the same name, and covers a multi-century narrative set in a futuristic galactic empire. A man named Hari Seldon uses a method called "psychohistory" that combines mass psychology with mathematics and foresees the collapse of civilization.
When Seldon reveals his prediction, stating that the empire will fall and humanity will enter a 30,000-year dark age, he's outcast to a far-off planet to establish the Foundation. The story follows protagonists in various sectors of the galaxy over a vast span of time, who try to prevent this dark age from occurring.
Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time novels, and the subsequent TV series, utilize many of the epic fantasy tropes that stemmed from The Lord of the Rings. One of the elements that makes the series unique, however, is the prevalent theme of time, drawing from Eastern ideas of the cyclical nature of existence.
Time is a major factor in both of these series, and it's part of what makes them so epic. Aside from Apple TV+'s show having excellent production value and a top-notch cast, the show's stakes feel proportionally grand and important to how The Wheel of Time felt.
Foundation's Third Season Is Currently Receiving Critical & Audience Acclaim
Much like The Wheel of Time, Foundation got off to a slower start with book fans and critics. However, it's vastly improved since its first season, continuing to get more engaging and more epic with every installment. Season 3 has, so far, had the most consistently positive reviews.
