Meghan Trainor shares that she ‘begged’ for ‘dream’ American Idol judge position following Katy Perry’s exit

Meghan Trainor wants to be the next judge on American Idol following Katy Perry's exit.

The singer voiced that desire on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Wednesday, June 12. She discussed her aspirations to join the cast and sit on the judges' panel of the singing competition show.

She stated that she would love to replace the Fireworks singer on American Idol, calling it her "dream job". Katy Perry just finished her last season of the singing show on May 19. In February, she announced on GMA that she would be leaving Idol and season 22 would be her last. She explained her decision to leave the show was to focus on her music career.

Andy asked Meghan if there have been any talks about her joining the series especially after fellow judge Luke Bryan and host Ryan Seacrest have said she would be a great judge. In April, Ryan told Entertainment Tonight, “She was very good. Meghan is a super talent too, and she's got a great sense of humor. She's fun and she's spontaneous."

"I think Meghan's always been real fun,” Luke also said to the outlet. “You know, that's kinda been her brand, to have fun. [She's] real witty, so certainly."

Meghan answered the question about Ryan and Luke with, “I’ve done every interview in the world and said that that is my dream job and I have emailed three awesome people who work in that world." The All About The Bass singer said while she knows those people "don’t really have the full say but I begged.”

“I have begged for this job,” she reiterated. “I haven’t heard any updates so check my emails but that is my dream job. I want to drive to work American Idol and then drive home.”

Meghan has previous experience with judging on singing competition series. She served as a judge on The Four: Battle for Stardom in 2018, The Voice UK in 2020 and Australian Idol in 2023. This past April she was a mentor for the Top 12 for Billboard #1 Hits Night on Idol. She also performed too. The 30 year-old explained that she loved watching the transition from early audition to becoming superstars.

“Love being a part of that process, I just get way too attached,” Meghan said. “It’s like my favorite show, I’ve watched it since I was a child.”

Andy asserted they needed to get Meghan on the show and Meghan agreed with, “Call somebody, hello!,”
