Kaley Cuoco Finds Next TV Project as Fans Wait for Based on a True Story Season 3 Renewal

Kaley Cuoco isn't waiting around for a Based on a True Story renewal announcement. The fan-favorite actor has been tapped to lead a new television series titled Vanished.

According to Deadline, the Based on a True Story actor will lead the forthcoming suspense drama series, which AGC Television is launching sales for this week at Series Mania in Lille. Also attached to the television project are The Hunger Games alum Sam Claflin, three-time Cesar winner Karin Viard, and Army of the Dead star Matthias Schweighöfer. Filming on Vanished is set to begin at the end of April in Paris and Marseilles with Barnaby Thompson in the director's chair.

Vanished was created by David Hilton and Preston Thompson. The logline for the suspense drama series reads as follows: "When a romantic getaway to Paris takes a dark turn with the sudden disappearance of her boyfriend Tom (Claflin) aboard a train to the south of France, Alice (Cuoco) is plunged into a web of intrigue and danger, uncovering shocking secrets about the man she thought she knew."

Kaley Cuoco Remains Booked and Busy

Vanished marks the latest leading role for Cuoco, who has been steadily working in Hollywood since the early 2000s. After leaving her mark on the ABC sitcom 8 Simple Rules, Cuoco became a household name thanks to her co-leading role as Penny in the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Cuoco appeared in all 12 seasons of the fan-favorite comedy series, which aired from 2007 to 2019. Her first major post-The Big Bang Theory project was the HBO Max comedic thriller series The Flight Attendant, which earned her back-to-back acting nominations at the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, and Emmys.

Since 2019, Cuoco has provided the voice of Harley Quinn in the DC character's self-titled adult animated series. Created by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey, Harley Quinn follows the title antihero after she chooses to leave her boyfriend, The Joker, to make a name for herself in Gotham City's criminal underworld. The adult cartoon has so far released five seasons (collectively consisting of 57 episodes), with the most recent wrapping up on Max on March 20.

Following the conclusion of The Flight Attendant in 2022, Cuoco became attached to the Peacock dark comedy thriller series Based on a True Story. The series follows married couple Ava and Nathan Bartlett, played by Cuoco and Chris Messina respectively, as they capitalize on America's growing obsession with true crime by launching a podcast with serial killer Matt Pierce (Tom Bateman). Since 2023, two seasons of Based on a True Story have been released, with both earning largely positive reviews from critics.

While Peacock has yet to renew the series for a third season, producer Michael Costigan told The Direct in December 2024 that there is still more story to tell for the Bartletts and Matt. "And that's where with Season 3, which we certainly feel like, if the audience is there with us in Season 2, we really think and hope that they're going to want to go with us again. Yeah, because there's a lot more to do," he said.

Both seasons of Based on a True Story are available to stream on Peacock.
