Jennifer Lawrence wore two great red carpet looks at last year’s Oscars: a polka dot Dior dress at the ceremony and a transparent white vintage Givenchy gown at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. But this year, the actress skipped the awards show and the late-night celebration for two good reasons.
Lawrence is pregnant with her second child and due very soon. She was photographed in New York City on Wednesday, and has no pressing reason to fly across the country; she is not nominated for any Academy Awards this year, nor is she presenting. Her good friend Emma Stone, however, presented the award for Best Actress.
Lawrence hasn’t done any big interviews in the last year, living her life largely in private with her son, Cy, and husband, Cooke Maroney. In 2023, she spoke with Cameron Diaz for Interview about how motherhood has changed how she approaches her career.
“There’s no squeezing [in projects] when you have a baby,” Lawrence said. “There’s just home, and it’s the best. It definitely helps weed out projects: ‘Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes. No. Is this worth being away from my child for half the day?’” She added that “fortunately, my husband is the greatest father in the entire world, so when I’m working, I don’t have any more guilt than the usual every day, all-day parent guilt.”
Diaz asked Lawrence if she sees herself taking a break from the industry at any time while her son is growing up.
“I think about dipping out a lot when I’m working,” Lawrence admitted. “I’m like, ‘I’m not going to be doing this forever. I’m tired. This is hard.’ Then you take a few months off, you read something terrific, and you’re like, ‘Oh my god, I have to make this.’ So I don’t know if I can answer that question. Of course, I’ve contemplated having a child that’s being born into a lifestyle that’s different from his friends. But kids have advantages and disadvantages when they’re born, all of them. The best thing I can do is just make sure he knows he’s loved, and that he’s our number one priority, and try to be a good example of kindness. I’m sure there will be challenges specifically from my choices and my lifestyle, and we’ll both have to confront that and deal with it when that day comes.”
