Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone have a lot in common as Oscar-winning actresses as well as new mothers and are spending tons of time together in New York City as they navigate similar life stages and challenges.
“Jennifer adores Emma, she’s one of her very best friends and was one of the first to meet the new baby,” a source exclusively tells Life & Style. The Hunger Games star, 34, welcomed her first child, Cy, with husband Cooke Maroney in February 2022 and a second child recently, though details about the gender and name are being kept private. While she’s been tight-lipped about her family in general, Jennifer did open up about the emotional impact of becoming a mother. “The morning after I gave birth, I felt like my whole life had started over,” she told Vogue after Cy’s birth. “I just stared. I was just so in love.”
The source adds, “It won’t surprise anyone that Emma is a godparent, they are that close, but they’re both fiercely private when it comes to their kids so that’s not something they would announce.”
Meanwhile, Emma, 36, also has a kid about Cy’s age after becoming a mom herself to Louise Jean in 2021 with husband Dave McCary. She’s kept her personal life similarly shrouded in mystery, but has spoken positively about the experience and happy she’s in a position to keep working after welcoming the little one. “I feel very lucky to be able to do what I do and also have time to be with my family,” she told Elle in 2023.
It makes sense then that, “Emma was one of the first people Jennifer called after she had the baby,” the insider says. “Being able to spend some time outside the house and off of mom-duty with her was a priority.”
The two A-listers first became friends after initially competing for parts. Jen previously discussed how badly she wanted Emma’s part in 2010’s Easy A. As actresses just getting their start, they quickly developed a relationship via mutual friend Woody Harrelson and have stayed close ever since.
“She’s my best friend,” the Superbad actress said of the Hunger Games star in an interview with W Magazine.
Now, their kids are sharing in their tight-knit friendship. “It’s great because their kids get along well, which makes it easy to get together because they can turn it into a playdate,” the source adds.
With stunningly successful careers that are still flourishing — Emma’s won two Oscars to date for her roles in La La Land in 2017 and more recently Poor Things in 2024, while Jennifer scooped up a Best Actress for Silver Lining’s Playbook in 2013 — both women can share their experiences as mothers and relate to the pressures and stresses of being one of the top actresses in Hollywood. “Jennifer feels so lucky to have a friend that gets her on so many levels,” the insider explains. “Being a woman in the industry and a mom — it’s a very unique situation. Not a lot of people can relate, and Emma can.”
“Plus, she’s got the sort of dark humor that Jennifer loves, they have so much fun.”
