Jennifer Aniston Shares Emotional Throwback Photos to Honor Matthew Perry on 1-Year Anniversary of His Death

Jennifer Aniston is remembering her friend Matthew Perry on the first anniversary of his sudden death.

On Monday, Oct. 18, Aniston, 55, shared an Instagram post in Perry's honor, writing in the caption, "1 year ❤️‍🩹" and tagging the Matthew Perry Foundation, which the late actor's family created in his honor to help others struggling with addiction.

Aniston's post included a black-and-white shot of the former costars from their early days on Friends, a shot of the actor kissing her forehead during a scene in the iconic Central Perk coffee house and a solo shot of Perry looking happy and healthy. She also included a group shot of the whole cast — Aniston, Perry, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer — sharing a hug before the final episode taping.

Perry was 54 when he died at his home in L.A. last year in an apparent drowning, that was later revealed to be influenced by the acute effects of ketamine, according to an autopsy report obtained by PEOPLE two months later.

After the Friends star's death, Aniston and her castmates said in a statement to PEOPLE that they were "so utterly devastated" by his loss.

"We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss," the statement read.

Aniston later shared an individual tribute on Instagram as she admitted that the grief of Perry's death "has been an insane wave of emotions that I’ve never experienced before."

"We loved him deeply. He was such a part of our DNA. We were always the 6 of us. This was a chosen family that forever changed the course of who we were and what our path was going to be," she wrote of the Friends cast's bond.

Aniston also shared a text he'd sent her recently "out of nowhere one day" that "says it all." He'd sent her a black-and-white photo of them reading a script where Aniston was laughing, and he wrote, "Making you laugh just made my day. It made my day:)"

"Matty, I love you so much and I know you are now completely at peace and out of any pain. I talk to you every day… sometimes I can almost hear you saying 'could you BE any crazier?' Rest little brother. You always made my day…"

Since the actor's family started the Matthew Perry Foundation in his honor weeks after his death, Aniston and her castmates have been outspoken in their support of its efforts.

On Giving Tuesday last year, she posted about the foundation on her Instagram Stories, asking her followers to "please join me and Matty’s family in supporting his foundation – which is working to help those suffering with addiction 🤍."

"He would have been grateful for the love 🥰," she said.
