‘I’m getting opportunities I wasn’t offered in my 20s and 30s,’ Jennifer Lopez on her Hollywood evolution

The star’s new Netflix thriller The Mother is one of three action films she has starred in

Jennifer Lopez, 53, has said she’s now being given opportunities in Hollywood that she didn’t have when she was a younger actress.

In January, Lopez starred as an action hero in Prime Video film Shotgun Wedding.

She recently completed filming on sci-fi adventure Atlas, and stars as a rogue military-trained assassin in new thriller The Mother on Netflix.

“I think it’s really about that I’m getting these opportunities to play these roles that I wasn’t even getting offered in my 20s and 30s,” said Lopez, 53, when compared to her former Parker castmate Jason Statham, who is known for his action roles.

“So it’s actually very empowering and when I get sent these scripts and I look at them.

“I just think that there’s a really beautiful story at the core of this and [we looked at] how big of an action movie [it could] be, depending on who we bought on as director,” she added to Yahoo! Entertainment.

“I don’t think you’ve ever seen something like this.”

The actress, who also revealed she showed the film to her 15-year-old twins, Emme and Max for feedback, added: “I think we’re used to seeing men in these kind of avenging roles, protecting their children, but you haven’t really seen a mother do it and a mother who’s capable in this way.”

Despite this, The Mother has been widely panned by critics who have seen the pre-released film.

SHOTGUN WEDDING Trailer (2023) Jennifer Lopez, Action Comedy Movie

LOPEZ RAMPED UP THE ACTION IN SHOTGUN WEDDING

The Guardian has branded it a “formulaic and muddled Netflix caper”, digital Spy dismisses it as just “an action thriller that is a showcase for Jennifer Lopez."

While the Hollywood Reporter wrote: “From the runway-ready fur hoodie she sports in the Alaskan wilderness to the flawless eye make-up and dewy complexion that withstand everything from childbirth to a knife fight…

“This is a performance so loaded with celebrity baggage it’s never going to be fully convincing as a deadly assassin.”

The Mother airs May, 12, on Netflix
