Emma Watson Reveals Why Dating a Non-Fan Is ‘Bliss’: ‘Please Don’t Apologize’ for Not Seeing My Movies

Emma Watson is looking for a connection that has nothing to do with the Wizarding World.

The Harry Potter alum, , is opening up about the unique challenges of finding love when your face is one of the most recognizable on the planet. During a wide-ranging conversation on the Wednesday, Sept. episode of Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Watson admitted that dating often feels like a “complete disaster and free-for-all.”

But for the actress, the real “bliss” comes when a date has absolutely no idea who Hermione Granger is.

“It’s funny, occasionally people will apologize to me for the fact they’ve not seen my films,” Watson told Shetty, , with a laugh. “And I will be like, ‘Please don’t apologize. That is bliss to me.'”

Watson explained that when a partner isn’t familiar with her filmography—which includes blockbusters like Beauty and the Beast and The Little Women—it removes a “ghost in the room” that often haunts her private life.

“I’m so relieved! I’m so incredibly relieved,” she said of those moments. “I think knowing you don’t have to navigate that extra degree of, like, weirdness is helpful.”

The actress described the “jarring” and “dehumanizing” experience of watching someone’s behavior “completely switch” the moment they realize they are sitting across from a global superstar.

“It does feel like my avatar enters the room unexpectedly, all of a sudden,” she shared. “And then I’m navigating a completely different conversation.”

The viral revelation has sparked a wave of conversation on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, with fans praising her desire for authenticity. “She just wants to be Emma, not the ‘Emma Watson’ brand. I totally get it,” one fan commented.

While Watson hasn’t been on the big screen since , her legacy in Hollywood remains massive. However, she has spent years fiercely guarding her privacy to avoid the “circus” of fame.

“I would hate anyone that I were with to feel like they were in any way part of a show or an act,” she previously told Vanity Fair in , noting that she refuses to let her romantic life become part of a “performance.”

Now, Watson is looking for a “dance” rather than a movie premiere. While she told Shetty that falling in love is “quite easy to do,” finding a true partnership is the real hurdle.

“I just think we have such a black-and-white idea about what love is supposed to be,” she added. “I wish I’d understood more before I went into battle. I do. I really, really do.”
