Emma Watson Reveals the Real Reason She Said ‘No’ to Cinderella Before Becoming Belle: ‘She Resonated So Much More’

Emma Watson is proof that you don’t need a glass slipper to be a princess—you just need a really good book and a bit of “defiance.”

The Harry Potter alum is currently sparking a massive conversation online after revealing that she actually turned down the lead role in Disney’s live-action Cinderella long before she ever stepped into Belle’s iconic yellow ballroom gown.

While Lily James eventually took on the role of the hearth-sweeping heroine, Watson admitted in a recent interview with Total Film that the character just didn’t speak to her the way the “outsider” from provincial France did.

“I didn’t know they were going to make Beauty and the Beast at the time I turned down Cinderella,” Watson shared. “But when they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did.”

For Watson, who has spent her post-Hogwarts years balancing roles in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Noah with her work as a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador, the decision was deeply personal.

As a vocal advocate for the HeForShe campaign, Watson is picky about the women she embodies on screen. She wanted a character who could serve as a modern role model for the young girls who look up to her.

“She remains curious, compassionate and open-minded,” Watson said of Belle. “And that’s the kind of woman I would want to embody as a role model, given the choice.”

Fans on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok are already praising the actress for staying true to her feminist roots, with many noting that Belle’s independent spirit perfectly mirrors Watson’s real-life activism.

But Watson didn’t just sign on for the role; she’s actively working to make Belle even more empowering. Collaborating with director Bill Condon, Watson helped craft a brand-new backstory: in this version, Belle is the inventor, not her father Maurice.

“There’s this kind of outsider quality that Belle had, and the fact she had this really empowering defiance of what was expected of her,” Watson explained. “In a strange way, she challenges the status quo of the place she lives in, and I found that really inspiring.”

It turns out Watson’s commitment to the “Tale as Old as Time” was so strong that she even reportedly turned down the lead in La La Land due to filming conflicts.

For Emma, Belle isn’t just a princess—she’s a woman who stays “independent” and “not easily swayed by fear-mongering.”

It looks like the library was always going to beat the pumpkin carriage for this star!
