Emma Watson Breaks Silence on J.K. Rowling Rift: ‘I Treasure Her’ Despite Public Clash Over Transgender Rights

By Thomas Jones 03/07/2026

Emma Watson is proving that even in the face of “extremely hurtful” public disagreements, there is still room for grace.

The Harry Potter star sat down for a deeply personal conversation on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, where she addressed the elephant in the room: her fractured relationship with Wizarding World creator J.K. Rowling.

For years, Watson and her co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint have been at odds with Rowling over the author’s controversial views on transgender rights. But despite the digital firestorm, Watson says she isn’t letting go of the bond they once shared.

“I really don’t believe that by having had that experience, and holding the love and support and views that I have, mean that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” Watson told Shetty.

The actress, who brought Hermione Granger to life for over a decade, has been a staunch advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Following Rowling’s essay questioning transgender identities, Watson famously took to X (formerly Twitter) to declare, “Trans people are who they say they are.”

However, the back-and-forth hasn’t always been easy. As recently as March , Rowling appeared to shade her former stars on social media, sparking a fresh wave of viral debate.

Reflecting on the rift, Watson admitted to Shetty that the lack of communication has been the hardest part. “The thing I’m most upset about is that a conversation was never made possible,” she shared.

Even so, she’s holding out hope for a future defined by empathy. “I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with,” she added.

It wasn’t all heavy talk, though! Watson also showed off her trademark wit when discussing a much more “grounded” topic: her recent six-month driving ban.

The actress was stripped of her license after a speeding incident in Oxford last July. Rather than hiding from the headlines, Watson laughed along with Shetty about the international coverage of the mishap.

“I was like, my shame is everywhere,” she giggled, before revealing her new mode of transportation.

“I recently started riding a bicycle,” she explained, calling the timing of her new hobby “particularly fortuitous” given her current legal inability to get behind the wheel.

From navigating complex ideological divides to pedaling through the English countryside, Emma Watson is showing the world exactly how to handle life’s bumps in the road with total class.
