The wizarding world nearly lost its brightest witch.
As fans dive into the highly anticipated HBO Max special, Harry Potter th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, one revelation is sending shockwaves through social media: Emma Watson seriously considered walking away from her role as Hermione Granger.
The reunion, which brings the iconic cast back to the original sets, features a deep dive into the highs and lows of child stardom. It was during a sit-down with her former co-stars that Watson admitted she reached a “tipping point” where the pressure of global fame became overwhelming.
Director David Yates, who helmed the final four films, recalled that Watson was considering bowing out around the time he signed on for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
“I think I was scared,” Watson tells her co-stars in the special. “I don’t know if you ever felt like it got to a tipping point where you were like, ‘This is kind of forever now.'”
The actress, who was just years old when she was cast, explained that the reality of her celebrity status began to feel isolating. “It was around the time of Order of the Phoenix when things started getting spicy for all of us,” she said. “The fame thing had finally hit home — in a big way.”
Watson isn’t the only one who felt the weight of the wand. Rupert Grint, who played the lovable Ron Weasley, admitted that he also had moments of doubt that he kept to himself.
“I also had sort of similar feelings to Emma, contemplating what life would be like if I called it a day,” Grint shared, noting that the young cast rarely discussed their struggles at the time. “We never really spoke about it. I guess we were just going through it at our own pace.”
Ultimately, it was the “genuine” support of the Potterheads that kept Watson in the fold. “The fans genuinely wanted me to succeed,” she noted emotionally. “And they all genuinely have each other’s backs. How great is that?”
The special marks a massive milestone for the franchise, following months of speculation from fans who feared a reunion would never happen. Even Daniel Radcliffe had previously played down the rumors of a “big get-together” just weeks before the project was officially announced.
The scale of the event is even larger than the Friends reunion from earlier this year, featuring heavyweights like Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman, and Tom Felton.
Notably absent from the new sit-down interviews is series creator J.K. Rowling, who appears only via archival footage. While Warner Bros. has not commented on her absence, the move hasn’t stopped fans and critics on X (formerly Twitter) from buzzing about the decision.
For many fans, seeing the “Golden Trio” back together is a dream come true—even if it almost didn’t happen.
