It looks like Disney's heavily criticized live-action Snow White remake is finally running out of steam after a strong streaming performance. The movie is dropping fast on Disney+'s charts.
FlixPatrol reports Snow White is down three spots to #6 on Disney+'s Top 10 in the United States for July 12. Despite this, the film continues to hold strong in other countries around the world and has a global average rank of 2.5 and holds the top spot in 12 countries. The heavily panned remake, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, suffered a disastrous box office run when it premiered this March.
A remake of Walt Disney's beloved 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the modern take on the story saw Zegler starring as the titular character, a princess who escapes an assassination attempt by her stepmother, the Evil Queen (Gadot) and joins forces with seven dwarfs in the forest. In the updated version of the story, the princess also comes across a rogue bandit named Jonathan (Andrew Burnap) and goes on a mission to reclaim her kingdom and free her people from the queen's dark grip.
Before Snow White even hit theaters, the film was already mired in controversy due to its color-blind casting and changes to the story, as well as its significant reimagining of the Seven Dwarfs. Things were complicated further by Zegler's public comments critiquing the original animated film's story for being problematic. As time went on and the premiere drew closer, Zegler and Gadot's opposing views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict saw boycotts of the film on both sides of the political fence.
As a result, Snow White was a box office bomb, grossing only $206 million worldwide despite being one of Disney's most expensive films with a budget of over $240 million. It also received generally negative reviews from critics and has a 39% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences enjoyed the film significantly more, with 2,500+ Verified Ratings putting the film at a 70% audience score.
The Live Action Snow White Debuted Strong on Disney+
Rachel Zegler's Snow White adaptation finally looked like it was turning around its troubled run when the film arrived on Disney+ internationally on June 11. Within 24 hours, the film had topped the charts in 12 countries and continued to hold its own against some strong competition on Disney's streaming platform.
Despite the recent success, Snow White's troubled rollout has seemingly caused some issues for future live-action Disney projects that were in development. Recent reports show that the Tangled live-action remake was put on hold after Snow White flopped. The future of Disney's many other remake projects also remains uncertain at this time.
Snow White is now available for streaming on Disney+.
