Chris Pine ‘Stunned’ By Wonder Woman 3 Cancellation: Gal Gadot Out

Chris Pine is stunned that Wonder Woman 3 has been canceled and there won’t be any more DC movies from director Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot.

The flick was canceled in the wake of James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over the DC films universe and rebooting with the DCU.

Wonder Woman 3 not moving forward also follows the poor reception to WW84, while the first film was well-received.

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman

What did Chris Pine say?

While the actor wasn’t set to return as Steve Trevor in the third film, while promoting his latest project, he still told Business Insider how surprised he was by the cancellation.

“I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere,” Pine said. “I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character; Patty is such a thoughtful director.”

Pine was also asked if Steve Trevor should have returned, but Pine said his story was finished in WW84.

“Me. No. Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo,” Pine said. “It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back.”

Chris Pine also admitted he had no interest in playing the character but Jenkins talked him into it.

“I had no interest in playing the boyfriend, and it sounded like second fiddle,” Pine said. “Then, in talking to Patty, the way she described it was, ‘Forget the superhero of it all, this is a romance, this is ‘Casablanca,’ that’s the movie I want to make.’ I was like, oh, now that is very cool because when have you seen a superhero film that was a love story, ultimately? That had nothing to do with blowing shit up.”

Gal Gadot out

Update: Despite previous rumors that Gal Gadot would be returning as Wonder Woman, in Variety‘s report about what Pine says above, the outlet reports James Gunn and Peter Safran are “creating a new DC Universe and Gadot’s Wonder Woman is not a part of it.”

Gunn’s big DCU announcement from last year announced a Paradise Lost TV series is in the works which set in Themyscira, home of the Amazons and birthplace of Wonder Woman, described as a drama focusing on the genesis and political intrigue of an island of all women.

As I tweeted December 2022, it’s my understanding that once Gunn took over the DCU is when Gadot’s Wonder Woman contracted ended which coincided with Wonder Woman 3 getting canceled and Jenkins out as well.

Patty Jenkins back on Star Wars

With Wonder Woman 3 now dead, it has actually been announced that Patty Jenkins has returned to Lucasfilm to finish her Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie that was also thought to be canceled.

“When I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, and I went and started working on that, we talked about, ‘Okay, maybe I’ll come back to Star Wars’ after Wonder Woman 3,” she said back in March. “So we did a deal for that to happen, started a deal, but I thought I was doing Wonder Woman 3. So when Wonder Woman 3 then went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, ‘Oh! You gotta finish this deal.’”

Jenkins continued, “We finished the deal right as the strike was beginning. So I now owe a draft of Star Wars, and so we will see what happens there. Like, who knows, they have a hard job in front of them of what’s the first movie they’re going to do. They have other directors that are working but I am now back on doing Rogue Squadron and we’ll see what happens. We need to get it to where we’re both super happy with it.”
