Angelina Jolie on the Oscar Trail
How are Angelina Jolie’s chances this year? Hot, cold? I don’t know and typically don’t pay attention until the nominations are released and then everyone starts fighting about snubs.
I received a request for her dressing gown in Maria and it is sumptuous, really something. I suspected it is custom-made and an interview with designer Massimo Cantini Parrini in Harper’s BAZAAR confirms it. I love the detail of how her extensive wardrobe came together and the dressing gown was a key piece.
It is truly one of a kind, nothing in my search came close to it. For something similar, I’d suggest seeking out a local knitter on Etsy. This isn’t an “add to cart” situation, it will take some hand-crafted skill and time. A great winter project!
Does shopping ever really help?
I was going to include some links to retailers that are helping with the LA fires but it kind of sent me on a spiral because does consumerism ever really help displaced people? Or is shopping another form of slacktivism? I don’t know!
Here’s what we do know: in a disaster, it is advisable to donate to an existing organization, not a new one that pops up. This is a good piece on how long-term help can be allocated and how physical donations (like clothes and books) can quickly become overwhelming, particularly for people who are displaced.
And beware, the wellness scammers are up in full force, promising charcoal cleanses and essential oils and the like – this piece in Mother Jones is a good resource (Anna Merlan is an expert on conspiracy theories and the like) – beware and far be it from me to tell you who to follow online, but these wellness people thrive off engagement.
But you’re writing about shopping, so shut up. OK fair! The January sales are popping off, I bought this red sweater from Baserange (a stylist introduced me to this line and I wear it every day); Rie Crew socks; and Gap kick pants which are very similar to the $900 High Sport pants people were talking about last year.
Oh and it’s just been announced that Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez are leaving Proenza Schouler. Last chance to nab some of their designs if you are so inclined – lots on sale here.
