Mamma Mia star Amanda Seyfried says she already knows what the future will hold for her character, Sophie, if the franchise ever gets a third film.
In an exclusive interview with People, the actor shared her thoughts on what Sophie might be up to if a third installment of the romantic comedy ever happens. She believes that her character would be a mom. She added how her own experience as a mother made her look at Sophie in a new light.
Seyfried mentioned that she loved to portray mothers on screen and would be excited to explore what Sophie would be like with kids in Mamma Mia 3. She also explained how she would like her character's journey as a parent to mirror the journey of Sophie's mother, Donna (Meryl Streep).
I love playing a mother, and I would love to dive into the curiosities of motherhood and raising children on a Greek island — just like Donna did with Sophie.
Seyfried went on to say that exploring Sophie’s life as a mother could add a new layer to both the story and the character. She admitted she doesn’t know what the exact plot for a third film would be. However, she was confident that if Mamma Mia 3 happens, there would be a lot of music and dancing.
I think that would be really interesting. I have no idea where the story is going to go, but I know there’s going to be a lot of singing and dancing.
While Seyfried appears to be uncertain about the franchise's future, the producer of the films, Judy Craymer, had confirmed a few months ago to Deadline that there will be a Mamma Mia 3. She said that the script has been written and that the film would be made. Craymer added that the movie is currently in development and that they were discussing potentially adding Sabrina Carpenter to the star-studded cast.
While the plot and other details remain so shrouded in mystery that its own star is seemingly still in the dark, the producer is absolutely certain that Mamma Mia 3 will be filmed and released in the near future. "Well, we know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen," she explained.
There is currently no confirmed release date for Mamma Mia 3 at the time of this article's publication.
