Emma Watson Gets Emotional Over ‘Bone-Breakingly Painful’ Struggle to Find Real Friends in Hollywood: ‘It Broke Me’

Emma Watson is pulling back the curtain on the “magic” of movie sets, and it’s not as sparkly as it looks.

In a deeply moving appearance on the Wednesday, Sept. episode of Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, the -year-old actress broke down in tears while discussing the isolation she felt in the film industry after leaving the Harry Potter franchise.

For Watson, who spent over a decade growing up alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, the expectation that every cast would become a “family” led to some devastating wake-up calls.

“I came to work looking for friendship and that was a very painful experience for me outside of Harry Potter and in Hollywood,” Watson shared, describing the rejection as “bone-breakingly painful.”

The actress, who hasn’t appeared on the big screen since ’s Little Women, explained that while she was looking for connection, most of her peers were focused solely on the “job.”

“They’re looking for: ‘This is my chance. This is my role… This is my career.’ And I was not of that mindset,” she admitted. “I just got my ass kicked. I really did.”

The viral clip has already sparked a massive wave of support on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, with fans praising her vulnerability. “It’s so rare to hear an A-lister be this honest about how lonely fame actually is,” one user wrote.

Watson attributed the difficult atmosphere to a “Molotov cocktail” of competition, envy, and rigid hierarchy. Getting visibly emotional, she confessed that the experience “broke” her.

“But in a way I’m proud that it did because I guess that means I have something left to break,” she said through tears. “I have a heart left to break.”

The Beauty and the Beast star also got candid about the “icky” side of movie promotion. She revealed that the “best friend” dynamic fans see on red carpets is often just a polished performance for the cameras.

“You always get asked when you’re promoting these big films, ‘So do you guys hang out on set and like are you all friends?'” Watson noted. “And everyone sort of like nods enthusiastically. But the truth is no one has seen each other outside of work.”

She explained that grueling schedules often leave actors with zero energy for real bonding. “Having to pretend that something exists that you actually really want but don’t have is… pretty grainy in the wound,” she added.

Despite the “hard learning” experience, Watson says she’s proud of herself for staying soft in a hard industry.

“I used to think I wasn’t strong enough,” she told Shetty. “But I’ve come to realize that if I were to have come out on top, it would have been a greater failure in terms of who I actually care about being.”
