It’s hard to imagine the Wizarding World without our favorite bright-eyed bookworm, Hermione Granger. But according to Emma Watson, there was a time when that nearly became a reality.

In the highly anticipated HBO Max special, Harry Potter th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, the -year-old actress gets vulnerable about the immense pressure of growing up in the global spotlight.

Watson, who was just years old when The Sorcerer’s Stone premiered in , admitted that the “tipping point” came as the franchise’s fame reached a fever pitch.

“I think I was scared,” Watson shared during the reunion, which brought together ten original cast members to celebrate the $. billion franchise. “I don’t know if you ever felt like it got to a tipping point where you were like… ‘This is kind of forever now.'”

Director David Yates, who helmed the final four films, recalled that Watson was considering backing out of the series right as she was entering her teens.

The actress, who later found massive success in the live-action Beauty and the Beast and Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, noted that the experience was often isolating despite the film’s massive popularity.

“At times, I was lonely,” she confessed, highlighting the unique struggle of child stars who must balance intense shooting schedules with their education and a “normal” childhood.

The Harry Potter series spanned eight films over a decade, meaning Watson and co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint spent the majority of their formative years on film sets rather than in traditional classrooms.

While Watson has since used her platform as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador to advocate for global change, she admits that the “forever” nature of being Hermione was a lot to shoulder as a young girl.

Fans on social media have been quick to rally behind the star. On X (formerly Twitter), one fan wrote, “Hearing Emma talk about her loneliness during the Potter years makes me want to give her a hug. She handled it with such grace.”

Over on TikTok, clips of Watson’s confession have already gone viral, with many praising her for her honesty regarding the mental health struggles of young actors.

Fortunately for fans, Watson eventually decided to see the journey through to the end, finishing the series with The Deathly Hallows – Part in .

While rumors recently swirled that Watson might be retiring from acting altogether, it seems she’s simply being more selective about her time in the spotlight—and after a decade at Hogwarts, who can blame her?
