At a time when viewership on the BBC continues to decline, it's essential to hold onto those who break the mold and find unlikely success. With that in mind, plenty is riding on the upcoming third season of the critically acclaimed police procedural series Vigil. As one of the BBC’s top three most-watched dramas of 2023, the second season fell to an underwhelming critical reception despite still maintaining a dedicated following. In the shadow of an explosive end to the second outing, fans will be happy to hear that Vigil Season 3 is officially in production, as shown by the frosty social media post available to view below.

The third season sees both DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) and Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) return, with their investigative skills taking them to both the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard and Scotland, as shown in the post. The cast for Season 3 includes many new faces, with others in the ensemble including Jeppe Beck Laursen, Tornike Gogrichiani, Steven Miller, Benjamin Wainwright, Artur Zai Barrera, Jordan Duvigneau, and Kaisa Hammarlund. With production now underway, writer Tom Edge said in a statement:

"I'm grateful to the BBC and World Productions for backing the ambition of a story that takes Vigil to the Arctic. This series grapples with the issues that will define tomorrow's world: melting ice caps, conflict over resources, energy wars, and lives put at risk in pursuit of peace and profits."

What Is 'Vigil' Season 3 About?

Vigil Season 2, although receiving a mixed reception, certainly dialed up the intensity on what was a breathless first outing. If that trend is set to continue, then what better place for an eerie, chilling mystery to unfold than in the bitter cold landscape depicted in the image above? The official synopsis for Season 3 promises that Amy and Kirsten's "new case takes them to a remote Arctic research station, where a member of a covert British special forces mission has been shot dead." The synopsis continues, "Amy and Kirsten will need to catch the killer and diffuse a potential international confrontation, driven by a land-grab for energy and resources in the changing polar climate, with both their careers and relationship on the line."

The hit BBC series Vigil has entered production on Season 3. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more updates on the best of British television.
